Global Warming - 'The Ice Castle' the review

When asked to write a review on your Pantomime I was a little apprehensive and felt rather under-qualified.  But since I have been involved with pantomime every year for the last 28 years, and previous to that singing and dancing in dancing school pantomimes, musicals shows and the like from a young age I guess I have a little experience to offer.

To me the whole package is what is important with all aspects supporting each other.  After coming to watch and enjoying ourselves very much, here are our thoughts.

First impression were good, the FOH stewards stood out well and everything was well organised, just a thought – that the seats could have been labelled with their seat number, we had to guess and count the number of seats in to where our tickets were!

It was a bold move to do something quite different but had all the elements of a really good pantomime.  Your cast was well rehearsed and word perfect and they carried a good storyline with good overcoming bad as with all traditional pantomime stories.  The moral and background of the story was also something that everybody could relate to.

There were good effects created for the cave and the opening number, with good creative lighting.

Your principal boy was well chosen with a good audience presence, attractive disposition and an excellent rapport.  Principal boy and girl were well suited for their parts.

The Penguin was fantastic, great for the children and fun for the adults and they all loved her. A well played strong character.

The Pigs, were brilliant and so very funny. Very well acted.  What a clever idea!

The costumes were, well done, and very colourful.  The costumes are always the first things to be seen, so are important with helping to set the scene and the atmosphere.  Being quite fanatical about costumes, I always like to see eye catching colours and design.

The Choreography was simple and effective enabling all chorus members to take an active part in the musical numbers.  The children were well rehearsed and enthusiastic, I liked your ideas using the skates but it could have been a little longer!

On the critical side, we thought it was half an hour too long!  I am also one to avoid the “one liner jokes”, as some are a little too corny!!!  But that is just our personal view.  I know that the professional pantomimes use these ideas but sometimes the audience just miss the point!

Audience participation was good and their interest was keep, which is always hard with setting and telling the story with some scenes.
