Prince Michael is a man – shock revelation

In a dramatic break with tradition the role of principal boy in the forthcoming production of Sleeping Beauty will be played by a man. In anticipation of widespread demonstrations and civil disobedience, the committee has urged everyone to remain calm.

The pioneer in this exercise in male liberation is Andy Northey, who has been cast in the role of Prince Michael.

Our Next Production

Our 2009 pantomime is to be Sleeping Beauty, written by our own members Peter Mitcheson, June Stevens and Annette Ward, authors of the successful The King’s New Clothes.

Set in the Kingdom of Harmony the story is based on the traditional fairy story of the beautiful Princess Dulcima, who as a result of a spell placed on her by the wicked Fairy Wildfire and Witch Cacklewell, falls into a long sleep, along with her father King Cadenza, mother Queen Melody, and Nanny Cuddles. So long do they sleep before being woken by the handsome Prince Michael, that they awake to a world of sat-nav, mobile phones and industrial vacuum cleaners, giving rise to much misunderstanding and hilarity.

In a departure from tradition, the principal boy is played not by a long legged girl in fishnet tights but by a heroic male explorer prince. Without giving away too much of the plot, it is safe to say that there is a happy ending, and all except the wicked Witch Cacklewell live happily ever after.
